We are social movements, grassroots organisations, trade
unions, women’s groups and
individuals from Sri Lankan civil society opposed to war,
neo-liberalism, social oppression, exploitation, violence,
communalism, religious fundamentalism and imperialism, and
committed to peace, equity, social justice, respect for one
another and our planet, and free and equal relations between
all peoples and nations.
We are displaced within our political system which makes no
space for us. We are post-colonial subjects being transformed by neo-liberalism into
greedy consumers without ever having become citizens. Even
in society we don’t meet each other, but only the ‘other’;
segmented and segregated by divisions that frustrate
dialogue.
We therefore come together voluntarily to construct a
‘peoples space’ for free exchange of experiences, democratic
discussion and debate, critical reflection and strategising
against while formulating alternatives to neo-liberalism,
ecological destruction, and the present imperialist form of
globalisation.
We aim to facilitate and coordinate networks and coalitions
for effective solidarity and non-violent resistance and
action, to strengthen our struggles for social justice
within Sri Lanka, South Asia and globally, recognising that
the transformation of our island, region and world is
fundamentally also a process of self-transformation.
